When lossless actually matters
For a photo you're about to post on social media or attach to a text message, the difference between PNG and JPG is invisible — both will look identical at normal viewing sizes, and JPG's smaller file uploads faster. Lossless conversion earns its extra file size in more specific situations: before heavy editing in software like Photoshop or Lightroom, where JPG's compression artifacts can compound with every re-save; before printing at a large size, where compression artifacts become more visible the more a photo is enlarged; or when a photo is being archived as a long-term master copy that later edits will branch from.
One thing worth knowing: PNG supports transparency, but a photo converted from HEIC won't actually have any — iPhone photos are fully opaque rectangles, so the transparency support that matters for logos or graphic design simply doesn't come into play here. The real reason to pick PNG for a photo is the lossless compression, not the transparency.
How much bigger is bigger? It depends heavily on the photo's content — a simple, low-detail image might only grow modestly, while a busy, high-detail photo can end up several times larger as a PNG than the original HEIC. If file size matters more than exactness, JPG at a high quality setting is usually the better trade-off.
